Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon

Whether you are new to running or are a seasoned professional, the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon presented by Landfall Realty is an exciting way to push yourself to your limits. The race is run on a street course overlooking the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Because the marathon course has an elevation of just 32 feet, you may just run your best race yet. The Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon is also a Boston Marathon qualifier. The marathon is incredibly popular in the community, and has been known to sell out—register early! Family, friends, and spectators are welcome to come cheer on their favorite runners. The NCAA basketball tourney kicks off in March off as well, so we’ll have college-themed cheer stations with DJs, bands and spectator hot spots. Click here for additional information.

Each April, a full week of natural beauty, big-name entertainment, festive galas, fun family events and Southern hospitality come together to showcase the charms of the Wilmington area. For community pride and springtime pageantry, the North Carolina Azalea Festival has no equal! More than 1,000 volunteers are required to stage over 50 events ranging from concerts to art shows, a street fair with interactive displays, home and garden tours, a parade, special exhibits, a circus and a variety of other entertainment and events. Coastal Carolina Trainfest

Six Model Railroad Organizations from across eastern Carolina join forces to spread the joy of model railroading! Trainfest encourages guest participation. Many of the displays allow for hands-on operation and equipment testing. The Locomotive Testing Station will be on hand for guests to test run their models. Show goers can test their problem solving skills on the interactive John Allen Timesaver switching puzzle. Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off

The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce will be holding the 21st Annual Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off on Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at the Carolina Beach Lake. The Chowder Cook-Off is all about delicious food, good music and family fun, so bring the kids along to this family-oriented event. Chefs from southeast North Carolina’s finest restaurants will prepare the region’s best chowder recipes – seafood or otherwise. Children can enjoy the park’s playground and a Kidz Zone with face painting, a giant inflatable slide and more. And for an additional fee, there will be paddleboat rides for the entire family. The gates open at 11:30AM and winners will be announced around 4:30PM. During the Chowder Cook-Off, enjoy live music by BOUNCE! and chowder-tasting (and voting) between 11:30AM and 3:30PM, but make sure to arrive early while the chowder is abundant. Wrightsville Beach SUP Surf Pro-Am

The Wrightsville Beach Museum welcomes participants to the Hobie & Salt Life SUP Surf Pro-Am April 14 -16th 2017. Held at the beautiful Oceanic Pier, the event will be a spectator-friendly, world-class event. The event is the largest Stand Up Paddle Surf Prize Purse on the East Coast with the potential for $8000* in the Pro Divisions. The amateur competition will also be awarded prizes and includes divisions for Groms (under 14), open 15-49, and Master's (50+). Lastly, bringing the pros to the same heats as the joes will be the Longboard SUP Division. This open division will be judged on longboard style maneuvers and will count towards the Newkirk All-Waterman Award. The Longboard SUP Division has a purse of $1,000 and the Newkirk has a $500 prize. Click here for additional information.
West Marine Carolina Cup

The 2017 West Marine Carolina Cup presented by SurfTech kicks off the race season with 5 courses: a kids race, the Harbor Island Recreational “fun” race, Money Island open race, 6 man outrigger race on Sunday and the renowned Graveyard Elite Race. This is our seventh year. In 2012, the Carolina Cup was the largest race on the East Coast with over 400 paddlers competing in the first day of races. In 2013, we had over 600. In 2014, there were over 700. The 2015 event was one of the most competitive events on record and also deemed the largest SUP event in the world. In 2016, the West Marine Carolina Cup grew even more attracting thousands of paddlers to Wrightsville Beach to come together on the East Coast. Registration for the 2017 Carolina Cup is now open, so register today!
28th Annual River to Sea Bike Ride

The 28th Annual River to Sea Bicycle Ride will take place on Saturday April 22, 2017. Participants will meet at Bailey’s Park at the 100 block of North Front Street in downtown Wilmington. Participants will depart Bailey’s Park promptly at 8AM. The ride, which is a slow-paced casual 20-mile round trip ride along the former Beach Car Line and back, will reach Wrightsville Beach Park at about 9:15AM. The ride is open to cyclists of all skill levels. For safety reasons, late arrivals will not be able to join the ride. Helmets are mandatory and riding is mostly on-road in mixed traffic. Police support will be provided along the way. Transportation will be provided by WAVE Transit for those who would rather not bike from Wrightsville Beach back to downtown Wilmington. Light refreshments will be available at Wrightsville Beach and upon return in downtown Wilmington. Last year, about 300 bicyclists participated in the ride. Click here for additional information.
NC Aquarium's 5K Race For the Planet

The 5K Race for the Planet welcomes racers of all skill levels. Serious runners take advantage of the flat course for a fast pace. First-timers appreciate the on-course encouragement. The fun, no-pressure atmosphere make it a great choice for families and walkers. The seaside portions of the course offer sweeping views of the Atlantic ocean for all. Our goal for this race is to plant the seed for eco-conscious living and raise funds for the Aquarium’s educational programs and green initiatives.The 5K Race for the Planet starts and ends at the Aquarium. The flat, mostly asphalt course runs through scenic Fort Fisher with amazing views of the ocean, maritime forest and historic Fort Fisher Civil War site. Click here for additional information.
The Wilmington Jewish Film Festival
April 23 - May 9, 2017
The Wilmington Jewish Film Festival, in association with The United Jewish Appeal of Wilmington, presents the 4th Annual Wilmington Jewish Film Festival, 3 by 3. Commencing April 23, 2017 the festival will offer nine award-winning feature films and selected shorts over three weeks, three per week, April 23 to 25, May 2 to 4 and May 7 to 9. All showings will be in historic Thalian Hall Main Stage. As in past years, the festival dates coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day and Israeli Independence Day, which enables us to fulfill our educational and entertainment mission. We are also organizing a spring outreach program for tenth graders in Wilmington. Our dream of exposing young people to fine international films with Jewish themes is becoming a reality. Rims on the River is an annual event that takes place this year on May 19-21, 2017. The show is in Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Cars dating 1980 and older line the streets of the historic downtown area, with the Cape Fear River and the diverse collection of retail stores as their backdrop. This event has grown into a premier show, drawing a wide array of cars from the entire southeast region of the state, as well as a few neighboring states, totaling approximately 700 vehicles on display in past years!
