University of North Carolina Wilmington traditions date back to the very year that Wilmington College first opened its doors to students. In 1947, a five-man student council was convened to secure a nickname and school colors for the first athletic teams. They chose the nickname “Seahawks” and the colors green and gold to represent the ocean and sandy beaches. The current school colors teal, gold and blue represent ‘the green of the ocean and the gold of the sand with the blue of the deep ocean’. Other UNCW traditions include Midnight Madness, the Involvement Carnival, Trask Trek and Homecoming. In addition, the Class of 2000 gifted the University a clock tower which is located on Campus Commons. It remains a significant part of important events and memorial programs. In September 1947, Wilmington College opened its doors to 238 students. Community College status was granted in 1957
and ground was broken for the College Road campus in 1961. Two years later, Wilmington College became a senior college
with a four-year curriculum, authorized to offer the bachelor’s degree. 1968-1969, Wilmington College became the University
of North Carolina at Wilmington. In 1977, UNCW was authorized to offer its first graduate programs at the master’s level.
In 1985, UNCW was elevated to a Comprehensive Level 1 University. Click here for a complete list of UNC Wilmington History.
